According to British estimates, the Russian army is making steady progress in the disputed city of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine. Their units had made “creeping gains” over the past three weeks, it said Monday. The situation is similar to the situation around the town of Bachmut further north.
“Ukrainian troops continue their organized defense, but their supply routes to the west are increasingly threatened by the Russian encirclement attack.” The extensive grounds of the coking plant in particular are a key to the city’s defence, it said in London. On the Russian side, units of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, which know the area well, are the hardest hit by the attacks.
Located just north of the large city of Donetsk, Avdiivka has been a front-line city since the start of the Donbass struggle in 2014. According to the ministry, the city has now been largely destroyed.
Daily updates from London
The British Ministry of Defense has published daily updates on the course of the war since the start of Russia’s offensive war against Ukraine, citing intelligence information. With this, the British government wants to both counter the Russian image and keep allies in line. Moscow accuses London of a disinformation campaign.
