Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg will receive an honorary doctorate in theology from the University of Helsinki. She was said to be honored for her “uncompromising and consistent” effort. Thunberg already received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bergen in 2019.
“Your actions have challenged all of us to transform our daily lives as members of communities and societies, but especially as people,” representatives of the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Theology wrote on their website. They grant Greta Thunberg an honorary doctorate in theology.
In the fall of 2018, the 20-year-old sat down in front of the Swedish parliament with a poster to protest for more climate protection. Soon the international movement “Fridays for Future” was born, which made the young woman famous all over the world. Thunberg’s position is that politicians do far too little to protect the climate and therefore act irresponsibly, especially towards young people. She demands, among other things, that greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced and that no more oil can be extracted.
No study needed for climate solutions
Of a possible study, the activist said in 2018: “Some people say I should study to become a climate scientist so that I can ‘solve the climate crisis’. But the climate crisis is already solved. We already have all the facts and solutions. all we have to do is wake up and change.” Now she will still receive a title – which will be awarded on June 9.
