To combat mass tourism, the mayor of Venice has imposed restrictions on holiday rentals. If you want to rent more than 120 days a year, you must register your apartment with the municipality. This is to promote sustainable renting and living in the city centre.
“Anyone who decides to rent only for 120 days should know that they will have the police at their doorstep for checks on all other 245 days,” Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro said. Since last summer, the municipality can set the maximum limit for the short-term rental of holiday apartments. The city center and islands are taken into account.
“For several months now, we have been working on a regulation with strict rules for the rental of holiday homes. If you want to rent out for longer, you must register your apartment with the municipality and adhere to strict rules. Beds, rooms, the presence of guests: everything must be centrally controlled and managed in one system (…)”, explains Brugnaro. This entails organisational, fiscal and security benefits.
“Center of all contemporary emergencies”
The ordinance aims to promote long-term renting and living in the city centre. At the same time, it is necessary to protect the cultural and environmental heritage of the Italian city.
“(…) Venice is at the center of all contemporary emergencies: from the climate to the depopulation of the city center. We don’t want the city and the lagoon to be just a place for tourists,” the mayor said. Venice should also be the city of residents and students.
