Governor of Florida: – No education on sexual orientation

Date:

Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis wants to expand controversial ban on teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity. Until now it applied to primary schools, now all other schools follow. The initiative will be voted on on April 19.

This was reported by various American media on Wednesday. The Florida Board of Education has voting rights. Parliament’s approval should not be necessary. The governor had already pushed through last year that teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity is prohibited in primary schools. If his new venture is successful, it should not be taught in the higher classes in the future.

White House: “Troubleshooting trend”
The plan immediately drew criticism from the White House in Washington and from LGBTQIA activists. “Let’s not be fooled. It’s part of a worrying and dangerous trend we’re seeing across the country,” said White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre. The organization Equality Florida spoke of a “general censorship” and the “book ban.” DeSantis wanted to “fuel his presidential ambitions” with his initiative.

The American governor is seen as a possible candidate for the 2024 presidential election. He should compete in the Republican heat against former president Donald Trump. DeSantis is known in Florida for a staunch right-wing stance and was reelected last fall.
