A submarine power cable between Estonia and Finland has failed for unknown reasons. The EstLink 2 connection was damaged for the second time in less than a year and had to be taken offline.
However, Estonia’s energy supply is guaranteed, the broadcaster ERR quotes the Estonian grid operator Elering. According to the report, EstLink 2 was defective in January and repaired in September. The cause at the time was a short circuit. The Finnish authorities are also vigilant at Christmas and are working on the problem, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo wrote on Platform
Disruptions occur again and again in submarine cables; accidents, for example, are often caused by ship anchors. However, data and power cables are also part of critical infrastructure and can therefore become targets of military operations. After two communications cables were damaged in the Baltic Sea, a sabotage investigation was launched in Sweden at the end of November.
Damaged data cables: China under suspicion
German Defense Minister Boris Pistoris said the damage to the cables between Finland and Germany and between Sweden and Lithuania had been caused deliberately. It is suspected to be a Chinese ship.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and the explosions on the Nord Stream pipelines more than seven months later, critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea has attracted increasing attention from the public and especially from NATO.
