Use in Tyrol – snowboarders on foot, hit by an avalanche

Date:

A young German snowboarder had bad luck in the Tyrolean Pitztal on Thursday. The 20-year-old was caught in an avalanche in the presence of his friend and was dragged a hundred meters.

The planned winter sports day in the Rifflsee/Grubenkopf ski area in St. Leonhard im Pitztal did not go as planned for the two 20 and 21-year-old friends. Actually, the snowboarders from Germany wanted to ski down the “Grubenkar” descent from the mountain station of the Grubenkopflift, but at an altitude of about 2200 meters, the two broke into the snow.

German was not covered by the snow
The men then unbuckled their snowboards and continued on foot toward the valley. As they came to an increasingly steep transition, the sleet avalanche broke and caught the 20-year-old who was leading. The German was swept away about 100 meters, but fortunately remained on the surface.

Treated only as an outpatient in the hospital
The Innerpitztal mountain rescue team arrived to treat the injured snowboarder. The emergency helicopter then flew him to the hospital in Zams, where he was discharged the same day after outpatient treatment. Mountain rescue and police, two emergency helicopters and a police helicopter were deployed.
