Washington does not seem to rule out negotiations on Ukraine’s future borders – while preserving the country’s independence and territorial integrity, of course, as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stressed on Thursday. However, Kiev’s position is still: no negotiations until Russian troops have withdrawn from the country. By the way, preparations for the “liberation” of Crimea are already underway.
Blinken assured a parliamentary committee in Washington that the decision on possible border changes rested solely with Ukrainian leaders. Any peace agreement must be “just and lasting”.
At the same time, the US Secretary of State added: “I believe there are areas in Ukraine where Ukrainians are determined to fight on the ground. And maybe there are areas that they decide they want to try to reclaim in a different way.”
Skepticism in the US government on the Crimea issue?
According to observers, the head of US diplomacy said that Washington does not consider it likely that Kiev’s troops will recapture all Russian-held Ukrainian territories, especially Crimea.
