The progressive sector of the General Council for the Judiciary (CGPJ) is meeting today for the first time to assess a possible dismissal en bloc, following the opening by the resignation of his colleague Concepción Sáez, who has created the ‘quorum’ needed would jeopardize the validity of Council decisions, with the ultimate goal of enforcing innovation of the institution, which has expired for more than four years.

According to sources from the governing body of the judges consulted by Europa Press, there are progressive members willing to follow in Sáez’s footsteps if it is a joint decision, as a trickle of firings would mean that the Council is in the power of the Conservative bloc, while a departure of the 8 Progressive members would risk the ‘quorum’ and therefore could cripple the CGPJ, forcing PSOE and PP to renew.

However, from the same sector, some voices insist that these are just internal contacts to listen to the views of all members of the progressive bloc. “There is nothing definitive,” they say.

The departure of the 8 progressive members could spark a new battle, some sources warn the ‘quorum’ of 11 vowels is debatable. And this because the regulations stipulate that there are 10 members plus the chairman, but as Raphael Mozo it is a Deputy Chairman it could be interpreted that it is possible to work with a dozen vowels.

Currently, the CGPJ consists of 18 vowels, 8 progressives -including Mozo- and 10 conservativestwo less than it should be, because during the four intervening years of the Council, the member Rafael Fernández Valverde retired and Victoria Cinto died, to which is added the resignation of Carlos Lesmes on October 9 to force a political agreement of renewal that still hasn’t arrived.
