From the shelter – the mayor of Linz wants the minister fired

Date:

In the discussion of two new mass departures for up to 400 asylum seekers in Linz, the mayor of Linz, Klaus Luger, is now turning directly to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. He demands an immediate rescission of the contracts and then some.

In the former Ibis hotel, in the immediate vicinity of the Linz train station, about 300 asylum seekers are to be accommodated at least until the end of the year. Only a few meters away is the former teaching house of the ÖBB. Here, too, there is room for up to 100 people. This, in turn, is not well received by all parties in the Linz city parliament – even the Greens – and is rejected. The mayor of Linz, Klaus Luger (SPÖ), has now sent an open letter directly to the responsible interior minister, Gerhard Karner (ÖVP).

All parties against
“I have already spoken out against this plan when I was first informed and then in writing in a letter dated March 23, 2023,” Luger said in his letter. He also emphasizes that all four political groups of the city council (SPÖ, ÖVP, FPÖ and Groenen) have spoken out against mass gatherings in the former hotel.

‘Decision contains explosives’
“The specific location near the main station and the largest recreational area in the inner city, the Volksgarten, represent a social overload. The resentment that quickly spread among the inhabitants of Linz harbors social explosives, as the impression is clearly expressed that it will be The federal government has completely ignored the will of the population in this case,” the city manager also points out the problematic situation in the middle of an already socially difficult district.

criticism of the method
“The acquisition of housing by the BBU is also met with particular incomprehension by the fact that the loss of currently more than 500 childcare places in other Länder, according to reports mainly in Vienna, must be compensated by massive housing in Linz,” says Luger, who is the action of the Federal Agency for Care and Support Services (BBU).

No more mass stays
And that is why Klaus Luger is calling on the Interior Minister to terminate all contracts with the owners of the property. “I urge you to commit by means of a moratorium not to rent mass accommodation in Linz in the future and to respect the city administration’s strategy of only renting units with a capacity of about 50 care places,” concludes Luger.
