Thousands of people painted blue in white and red hats gathered in rainy weather in the Breton town of Landerneau over the weekend to break the world record for the largest Smurf gathering.
In the city with 16,000 inhabitants, about 2,600 Smurfs were eventually counted on Saturday, so that the record attempt narrowly failed.
“Great good time”
“The rain has cooled some people down a bit. But the most important thing is that we had a great time,” Jules Lesieur, co-chairman of the association that organized the Landerneau meeting, told AFP.
“balm for the soul”
Many business people joined in and decorated their shop windows with Smurf figures, comics or stickers. “It’s fun, there’s a good atmosphere. Everyone loves it, we’re pursuing a goal that we can enjoy. It’s not easy in times like these,” says Benoit Kermarec, 59, dressed as a Smurf.
“The fact that there are small events like this is good for people, it’s balm for the soul,” said 25-year-old Morgane Derrien, who dressed as Smurfette.
Officially, it is still the small German community of Lauchringen on the German-Swiss border that holds the world record for the largest Smurf gathering with 2,762 participants on February 16, 2019.
Anyway „biggest smurf gathering in the rain“
However, about a year later, on March 7, 2020, Landerneau had surpassed that record with 3,549 Smurfs. However, the record was not recognized by the Guinness Book because, according to the organizers, a document was missing.
The fact that it was just not enough this time could hardly dampen the cheerful atmosphere in Landerneau. “We are certainly the largest Smurf gathering in the rain,” said Lesieur.
