The first ski resort in Salzburg is adapting its fuel and using vegetable oil will save about 90 percent of carbon dioxide from the next winter season.
The mountain railways in Leogang are now playing a pioneering role: from the winter of 2023/24, the snowcats and other vehicles of the mountain railways will be powered with installation power as probably the first ski area in Austria. To be more precise: with the HVO100 fuel made from 100 percent renewable raw materials. This is “hydrogenated vegetable oil” that is produced, for example, from residual substances such as used frying oil or frying fat.
Before the current winter season, the people from Leogang had already switched to the synthetic diesel fuel GTL. The vehicles and snow clearers do not need to be converted for the new switch to vegetable fuel: only the tanks at the company petrol station need to be emptied and cleaned. The mountain railways require 220,000 liters of fuel. The switch saves about 90 percent of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted.
