At Mirabell Palace – cleaning lady acquitted after water damage

Date:

Crumbling plaster and yellow walls in the monumental Mirabell Palace: As the readers of “Krone” know, water damage there caused about 170,000 euros in damage. A cleaning lady would have let the water run for a weekend, the prosecutor accused her. But the court has now acquitted her.

The cleaner was already convinced on the first day of the hearing at the end of January in the Salzburg Regional Court: “It wasn’t me.”

For ten years she worked as a cleaning lady at various companies: “Always to full satisfaction”, emphasizes the defense lawyer. But the last employer, the Salzburg magistrate, did not want to renew her trial contract for the water incident. An act of revenge as a possible motive for the serious material damage? The woman strongly denied this.

Technical defect excluded
In any case, she was targeted by reading the chip cards needed to open the doors. The suspect cleaned the castle on Friday evening. On Monday, April 25, 2022, several monumental rooms were already under water. “When I opened the doors at 4 am, I already heard rustling. On the 1st floor I saw that the water tap was open and I immediately turned it off,” said an employee on the witness stand.

According to the water system record, there has been a significant increase in water consumption since Saturday evening. However, an expert was able to rule out a technical defect on Monday on the second day of negotiations. There was no evidence for a conviction. Therefore: acquittal for the cleaning lady, not legally binding.
