Russia reportedly suffered heavy casualties in its attacks on the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka in Donetsk Oblast. This is evident from the daily update from the British Ministry of Defense in London on the war in Ukraine on Tuesday.
In recent days, Russia has prioritized an operation to encircle the town of Avdiivka in Donetsk oblast. However, Russian forces have made little progress at the cost of heavy armored vehicle losses, London reports.
The 10th Panzer Regiment loses most of its tanks
The Russian 10th Tank Regiment probably lost a large part of its tanks when it tried to encircle Avdiivka from the south. The regiment is part of the 3rd Army Corps, the first major new formation Russia has raised in support of its invasion of Ukraine since August 2022, according to the British Ministry of Defense (tweet below).
Numerous reports would indicate that the 3rd Army Corps struggled with indiscipline and poor morale. Despite training in Belorussia (Belarus), the formation still “appears to show only limited combat effectiveness,” London sources said, citing intelligence information.
Losses due to tactically flawed attacks
The armored regiment’s casualties were probably largely due to tactically flawed frontal attacks, similar to those seen in other recently failed Russian tank attacks, such as at the town of Vuhledar.
Military chief calls for evacuation
Until a year ago, Avdiivka was a thriving industrial city with 30,000 inhabitants. The war has driven most of them away. On Tuesday, the head of the city’s Ukrainian military administration called on residents to evacuate. “You have to go, you have to pack your things, especially with your children,” he writes on Telegram.
The British Ministry of Defense has been providing daily updates on the progress of the war since the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine. With this, the British government wants to both counter the Russian image and keep allies in line. Moscow accuses London of a disinformation campaign.
