Major survey – This is what Austrians think of the hype AI ChatGPT

Date:

Only a few Austrians use the AI-based chatbot ChatGPT – but the majority want to strictly regulate or even ban its use in schools and universities. This is the conclusion of a study commissioned by management consultancy PwC. 37 percent fear for their own job due to artificial intelligence (AI).

In February 2023, the market and opinion research institute Marketagent surveyed a total of 1001 people across Austria between the ages of 14 and 75 about their use and attitudes towards ChatGPT and AI. ChatGPT is not yet widely used: only 18 percent do so – although this share in the youngest age group (up to 28 years) is already just over a third. A quarter of non-users would like to do this in the future.

Popular as a translation aid
Active or potential users mainly use the chatbot to translate and write texts in a foreign language (75 percent), as a search engine (73 percent) or to write made-up texts for entertainment purposes (61 percent) and to write work-related texts ( 55 percent). After all, 37 percent of active or potential users use it to write or plan to write love greetings, letters or poems.

However, more than two-thirds of all respondents have little faith in AI applications and find their increasing use scary or disturbing. One of the biggest concerns and fears is that ChatGPT and AI will increasingly be used for fraud purposes (78 percent) or fall back on dubious sources of information or represent false information (77 percent).

Majority for strict regulation
Just over two-thirds have moral and ethical concerns. Accordingly, 81 percent call for tighter regulation, monitoring, and regular review of ChatGPT and other AI applications to ensure privacy, neutrality, and correctness.

The Austrians in particular are also afraid of jobs. 63 percent believe that AI and AI applications will threaten numerous jobs in Austria in the future and can bring about a change in the world of work. 37 percent think that their own job can be replaced in whole or in part.

Three-quarters of respondents are concerned that AI could have a negative impact on education. Almost two-thirds therefore support a ban on ChatGPT and other AI applications in schools and universities or other educational institutions.
