Out of desperation, the owner entered the blood values and complaints into the chatbot ChatGPT. The artificial intelligence did what the vet couldn’t: it gave the correct diagnosis for “Sassy”.
The dog owner, who goes by the username Peakcooper, reported the incident on Twitter. Previously, his dog had been bitten by a tick – the parasite had transmitted a disease. “Sassy” suffered from anemia. After typical symptoms such as fatigue and loss of appetite had initially improved, the four-legged friend was in a bad condition after a few days.
“I then saw that her gums had become very pale, so we went back to the vet,” says the owner. But all tests for diseases that can be transmitted by ticks were unsuccessful. The vet could only wait for suggestions and hope for improvement.
Program emphasized before correct diagnosis: „I’m not a vet“
The master finally had an idea: “I thought ChatGPT4 might be good at medical diagnostics, so I described the situation in great detail.” He also went into detail about the results of the blood test. The Twitter user was ultimately thrilled with the result. “I’m not a veterinarian,” the program made clear at the beginning – but was then able to make the correct diagnosis.
ChatGPT presented an immune-related hemolytic anemia as a possible clinical picture. This is an autoimmune disease, an immune response against your own body cells. This destroys the red blood cells. Finally, a second vet was consulted, who specifically tested the bitch for IHA. “After numerous further investigations, the diagnosis was confirmed. ChatGPT4 was right,” said Sassy’s owner.
The bitch is doing well now. “I can’t even imagine what medical diagnostics will look like in 20 years,” says user Peekcooper.
