Criminal sextet – youth gangs steel cars for joyrides

Date:

Thanks to intensive cooperation between police officers from the Vöcklabruck district in Upper Austria and officials from the LKA Salzburg, a gang of six youths between the ages of 12 and 17 was identified. Between January 23 and February 11, the sextet allegedly used six vehicles without permission and committed thefts from unlocked cars, burglaries and withholding documents. In total, more than 40 criminal offenses could be proven against the gang in this period alone in the Vöcklabruck district.

The suspicious young people (all from the state of Salzburg) drove from Salzburg to the Vöcklabruck district and tried to see if parked cars were unlocked in different constellations at different locations. If so, the cars were searched and cash and other valuables stored in them were stolen. Among other things, they would have bought cigarettes with stolen debit cards.

Tours through Upper Austria and Salzburg
Some cars also had the car keys inside. The young people then used this for spray rides. Although none of those involved had a valid driver’s license, the stolen cars drove through Upper Austria and Salzburg. Some of them were scrapped in the process or simply abandoned somewhere due to empty fuel tanks.

Hardly any sense of injustice
After that, however, new vehicles were spied on, searched and used for spray rides. Over time, the youth gang was already targeted by the detectives, but without any sense of wrongdoing, the crimes apparently continued unabashedly – partly because they were not criminally responsible. However, one of the defendants eventually confessed to all the crimes in the Vöcklabruck district and also confirmed the involvement of the others.

More crimes identified
As the investigation revealed, the gang allegedly committed other similar crimes, at least in the Salzburg region and Gmunden district, which could also be attributed to traces, video camera footage and statements made by the suspect during interrogations.

Three are now in custody
Three young people who were previously known for various criminal offenses have been taken to Puch-Urstein prison. The total damage amount of the at least four damaged vehicles and the amount of the stolen goods cannot yet be quantified.
