Especially sexual enhancers – Customs picked up more counterfeit medicines in 2022

Last year, customs seized considerably more counterfeit medicines, a total of more than 830,000. The increase from 2021 is 150 percent, according to the Piracy Report 2022, published on Wednesday. Leaders are means to increase potency.

Officials also pulled 1,400 counterfeit products from the market, most of which come from Asia and are often harmful to the environment and health. To smuggle the goods into Austria, about a quarter of the items seized in the previous year were declared as aid supplies for Ukraine.

Fakes are usually sold over the internet
Classic product counterfeits often relate to designer clothes, shoes, sunglasses, handbags, watches, but also mobile phones. Such counterfeits are usually sold over the Internet and sent by mail, making it difficult for customs officials to track them down.

Leader sexual enhancer
The frontrunners in medicines and health products seized by customs were sexual enhancers and fertility-enhancing products, followed by sleeping pills and tranquilizers, painkillers and anti-inflammatories.

For example, in early December 2022, the customs team at Vienna Airport stopped a cargo shipment containing three tons of sexual enhancers that had been transported by truck from India via Frankfurt to Vienna. Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) warned that inferior counterfeit medicines endanger the lives of consumers.
