An ominous object in the immediate vicinity of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline recently caused a lot of guesswork. While Russia immediately exploited this for propaganda purposes, the object has now been recovered by Denmark from a depth of 73 meters. Russian representatives also attended the event.
Russian President Vladimir Putin first pointed to the mysterious object in a television report in connection with the attacks on the gas pipeline. According to the Kremlin boss, “specialists” believe that it “may be an antenna to receive a signal to activate an explosive”.
It should be investigated whether the object found has anything to do with the “act of terrorism” on the Nord Stream lines, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov finally said last week: “And apparently he did,” he said at the time.
That’s behind the find
The Danish authorities are now creating facts; As the Danish energy authority announced on Wednesday, citing the military, the recovery of the object was already completed on Tuesday. A representative of the owner company, Nord Stream 2 AG, whose main shareholder is Russian energy company Gazprom, was also present, it was stressed.
Investigation revealed that it was an empty smoke buoy used for optical marking. The approximately 40 centimeters high and cylindrical object does not pose a security risk, confirming the original assumptions of the Danish authorities.
Mystery still unsolved
At the end of September 2022, a total of four leaks were discovered in the two gas pipelines Nord Stream 1 and 2 as a result of explosions near the Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm. Authorities suspect sabotage. It is unclear who is responsible for this. Germany, Sweden and Denmark have launched investigations.
German government politicians recently warned against jumping to conclusions and warned to wait for the end of the investigations. Moscow, on the other hand, soon after the attack blamed the “Anglo-Saxons”, that is, the British and the Americans.
