Stuck on bridge – climate activists reported Wednesday after protest

Date:

Traffic in the heart of the provincial capital Salzburg came to a standstill on Wednesday morning. Protesters of the last generation once again blocked morning traffic.

Just before eight o’clock there were four people with safety vests and a meter-long banner with the inscription ‘No new drilling. We are racing to climate hell” in the middle of the Salzburg State Bridge. The four troublemakers are members of the Last Generation Movement and wanted to draw attention to the climate crisis with their protest action.

“Because it is escalating in Austria. That’s why we continue with peaceful protests,” said David Sonnenbaum. The activist is a member of the same group.

As the cars and buses halted and passersby and commuters vented their anger with swear words and threats of violence, the police called on climate activists to clear the bridge. But it’s not that simple. Because: Three of the demonstrators had glued themselves to the road with superglue.

The police reported the four demonstrators
It was only after an hour that police officers were able to carefully remove the air conditioning glue from the roadway with solvents. They then carried the four activists off the road. “Although they are fine, all four have been reported for violating the Assembly Act,” Sonnenbaum said. It is still unclear whether more advertisements will follow in the context of the Road Traffic Regulation.

With the campaign, the climate activists want to draw attention to the failed climate goals of Salzburg, Austria and Europe. In addition to halting new oil and gas drilling, they are also demanding a 100 speed limit on the highway. This direct measure would lead to better air and less CO₂ emissions.
