Small boat capsized – Illegal border crossing: Eight killed in marshland

Date:

At least eight people have died in a swamp in Canada in an alleged attempt to cross the border into the United States, police say. A total of eight bodies have been recovered since Thursday near a capsized boat belonging to a missing Akwesasne Mohawk tribesman, a local police spokesman said.

The victims – six adults and two children – were found to belong to an Indian family and a family of Canadian citizens of Romanian descent. The police suspect that the people wanted to enter the United States illegally.

“Not a good time to be on the water”
“It was not a good time to be on the water,” police said on Saturday. The boat was too small, the weather was stormy and rainy.

According to the police, some Canadian residents in the vast border area would offer to help with the crossing to the United States for money. Attempted border crossings in the region have increased since the beginning of the year.

Divers continue to search for bodies in Mohawk territory. The area extends over the Canadian provinces of Québec and Ontario and the US state of New York.

Trudeau sent condolences to family members
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered his condolences to the families of the deceased. “This is a heartbreaking situation,” he said Friday.
