Since Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov took command of the “military special operation” against Ukraine, his focus, according to British sources, has been only on the winter offensive. Without success – because Russia’s attempts to gain stronger military control over the Donbass region have failed.
The aim of the winter offensive was to extend Russian control over the entire eastern Ukrainian Donbass region, the British Defense Ministry wrote in its intelligence update on Saturday. “After 80 days, it is becoming increasingly clear that this project has failed,” it said. Russian frontline troops in the region could have made minimal gains with heavy casualties. In doing so, they would have largely gambled away the temporary personnel benefit of last fall’s Russian “partial mobilization”.
Russia with new conscription campaign
Against the background of the offensive war against Ukraine, which has been going on for more than a year, the conscription campaign for the basic military service began in Russia on Saturday. The first of the two campaigns this year will last until July 15, the RBK portal reported Saturday, citing a decree issued by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. According to Vice Admiral Vladimir Tsimlyansky of the General Staff, a total of 700,000 potential conscripts had been registered in advance.
The conscripts, this time 147,000, should not be used for the war in Ukraine, he assured. Zimljanski said on Friday that convocations from district military replacement offices will also be sent electronically for the first time. Where this is not possible, the decision will continue to be handed over personally. Meanwhile, politicians argue about the validity of the electronic notification: according to the deputy chief of the Defense Committee in the State Duma, Yuri Shvytkin, such a notification is equivalent to a draft notification. On the other hand, Viktor Bondarev, the head of the defense committee in the Federation Council, told the upper house of the Russian parliament that such emails “are not draft messages”.
