A mother struggles – “I don’t want to give my son to a home”

Michaela Schäffer from Linz has been caring for her severely disabled son alone for 24 years. But it is becoming increasingly difficult and now the mother has to fight to continue caring for her son at home.

Michael Schäffer is annoying, she is loud, she speaks her mind freely and she is uncomfortable. “But I don’t see any other option,” says the 57-year-old in an interview with the “Krone”. Because life has not always been kind to the woman from Linz. Her son Sven was rescued 24 years ago – Pumperlgsund. But in the hospital he did not get enough to drink and that had dramatic consequences. Sven is seriously mentally and physically handicapped, is blind and is repeatedly plagued by epileptic seizures. Because the sleep center in his brain is damaged, he has a disturbed day-night rhythm.

But as if that weren’t enough, the woman from Linz has been fighting with the authorities for years. “They don’t want to pay me for personal help. They said I would get full care. “But I don’t want to put my son in a home, I want to care for him at home for as long as possible,” says the woman from Linz belligerently.

Childcare not realistic
The state’s social services emphasize that Ms. Schäffer has received several offers. “Sven can also be included in childcare,” it says. But that is not realistic for the mother. “What is he doing here? In terms of care, he is far too intensive. “Besides, he has been there before, it didn’t work, he broke his shoulder there,” says his mother. Because she is already at the end of her strength, she pulls She is currently pulling out all the stops and writing to all politicians and the Ombudsman in the hope of getting what she wants. However, she also has to fight on another front. She has to answer in court because of an allegedly forged invoice. Not the first ordeal that Schäffer has had to endure, and she has won them all (except one) so far.
