Against the background of North Korea’s improved military capabilities, South Korea, the United States and Japan will begin joint naval maneuvers on Monday. The trilateral exercises will take place in international waters off the South Korean island of Jeju.
A US aircraft carrier battle group led by the USS Nimitz, which arrived in the southeastern city of Busan last week, will participate in the maneuvers, South Korea’s defense ministry said.
A mobile anti-submarine training target is used to simulate underwater North Korean threats. The three countries last held trilateral exercises against submarines in September.
North Korea is fueling tensions
