Russia defended itself against mass criticism of its presidency of the UN Security Council on Monday and assured it would not abuse the position. “On the one hand there is the national position and on the other hand the role of the Council presidency,” said Russian ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebensia.
Russia will not abuse the prerogatives of the presidency, he stressed. The presidency of the UN Security Council rotates monthly, with the 15 member states alternating in alphabetical order. This month it is Russia’s turn, as planned.
Ukraine angry at Russian presidency
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced on Sunday that the EU would protect the Security Council from “any abuse” by Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the Russian presidency as evidence of the “failure” of international institutions.
Moscow had announced in recent days that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov would chair a Security Council meeting in April on the topic of “Effective Multilateralism”. Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also said Lavrov would lead a debate on the Middle East on April 25.
