According to British intelligence, Russia wants to continue using mercenaries in the war against Ukraine. However, the Kremlin is looking for alternatives to the infamous Wagner group. This is now too “important” for some in Moscow.
Wagner forces, supported by regular units of Russian forces, continue to advance into the center of the still-contested Ukrainian city of Bakhmut. Experts from the American Institute for War Studies (ISW) report this.
But it is precisely these successes that could mean the downfall of the mercenary team. Apparently Unity is getting too powerful for the Kremlin.
According to information from the British secret services, Russia plans to build up more mercenaries for the war against Ukraine. The aim is to replace the Wagner Group in its “significant” role, the Ministry of Defense announced in London on Tuesday.
“Quiet Feud”
Because of the “high-profile feud” between the Ministry of Defense and Wagner, the Russian military leadership wanted a private army they could better control. “However, there is no other known Russian private army that currently matches Wagner’s size or fighting power,” it said.
Russia considers the use of private mercenaries in Ukraine useful in principle, according to the British ministry. These would pay better and be more efficient than the regular army. In addition, the Russian leadership is likely under the impression that the loss of private troops would be more tolerated by society than dead and wounded regular soldiers, London said.
