Taiwan President Tsai Ing Wen was briefed on the security situation in her home region ahead of her scheduled meeting with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles. China had threatened unspecified retaliation if the meeting was held before Wednesday. The People’s Republic considers Taiwan a breakaway province.
In August 2022, China conducted extensive military maneuvers around the island after then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan’s capital Taipei. Beijing sees a meeting at such a high political level as a departure from the principle of the one-China policy recognized by the United States and many other Western countries. The US is the most important ally of democratically organized Taiwan. Relations between Washington and Beijing have deteriorated significantly recently.
Stopover in California after touring Central America
Taiwan’s president arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday night on his way back from a visit to Central America. Her office said in a statement that it had had its experts briefed on the regional situation. Taiwan has so far reported no unusual Chinese military moves ahead of the meeting with Republican McCarthy.
Chinese state media reported on Wednesday that a ship belonging to the Maritime Safety Administration of China’s Fujian province was patrolling the central and northern parts of the Taiwan Strait.
