Russian deported! – Trouble in Bali: panting on sacred mountain

Date:

A 24-year-old man from Moscow did not make a good impression with his behavior on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali. The tourist posed half-naked on a sacred mountain and posted the photo online – an absolute no-go in the country.

The Russian citizen, who calls himself Yuri Chilikin in online media, had posed nude from the waist down on Mount Agung. In Hinduism, the dominant religion in Bali, the highest mountain on the island is considered the home of the gods.

What was he thinking? In a statement, Chilikin said: “I conquered the top and defeated myself, so to speak. So I wanted to capture that in an unconventional way. And that’s how the picture I want to forget forever was made.”

Apology and Purification Ritual
The offensive photo of the man surfaced last month. The Russian was arrested and interrogated. He apologized for his behavior and had to attend a pre-Agung purification ritual.

Chilikin posted a photo of this religious ritual on Instagram on Monday, writing, “I have done everything I can to rectify the situation.” The incident and its fallout were “a good lesson for him on how not to behave”. Apparently that didn’t change the anger. According to Russian media reports, the Russian will be deported anyway and will be blacklisted for six months.

Offensive behavior by tourists is on the rise
In recent weeks, incidents of offensive behavior by tourists in Bali have increased. Russian holidaymakers in particular are accused of repeated misconduct. Bali Governor Wayan Koster wrote a letter to the Indonesian government last month urging it to revoke the privilege of Russian and Ukrainian tourists to obtain visas immediately upon arrival in the country.

Authorities demand harsher consequences
Meanwhile, the authorities in Bali want to crack down on misconduct among tourists. “Please enjoy the beauty of nature (…) in Bali while respecting the rules,” said Barron Ichsan of the immigration service on Wednesday. “If you commit a breach, we will not shy away from taking decisive action.”
