Despite the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) “Save bees and farmers”, the European Commission sees no further action necessary. More than a million signatures have been collected for the environmental initiative.
The initiative has called on the European Commission to phase out synthetic pesticides by 2035, restore biodiversity in agricultural landscapes and support farmers in the transition to sustainable agriculture, the EU authority said.
Reference to Green Deal
The EU commission referred to plans that have already been submitted to EU states and the EU parliament as part of the Green Deal, such as the Nature Restoration Act or the Sustainable Use of Pesticides Regulation. “Taken together, the Commission’s proposals and initiatives represent a comprehensive response to the demands set out by the ECI.”
If a European citizens’ initiative manages to collect a million signatures from at least seven EU countries within a year, the European Commission must respond. Then she must account for whether she complies with the request.
