US President Joe Biden on Thursday formally asked Congress for $33 billion in additional aid to Ukraine, of which: more than 20,000 million go to weapons in support of Kiev’s struggle against the Russian invasion.
“As long as the attacks and atrocities continue, we will continue to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression,” Biden said in a White House address.
The president also noted that it is “critical” for Congress to give the green light to this aid, as giving in to “aggression would be much more expensive”.
“Our aid so far has made a difference on the battlefield and helped Ukraine win the battle for Kiev,” Biden said, referring to the success of Ukrainian forces in repelling Russia’s advance into the capital.
Biden’s request for assistance includes, in addition to sending arms and ammunition to Ukraine, $8.5 billion in direct economic aid and $3 billion in humanitarian aid to the country.
At the same time, the US president today also proposed to Congress to donate the funds seized from Russian oligarchs to Ukraine as a compensatory measure for the damage Russia inflicted on that country during the war.
Biden’s announcements come after Foreign Secretary Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev on Sunday during the highest visit by US officials to the country since Moscow began Ukraine on Feb. 24.
