At St. Gilgen (Salzburg-Surroundings District), in the Illingerberg-Alm area below the Zwölferhorn, a slope of about eight hectares begins to slide.
Both the road to the Illingerberg and the hiking trail to the Zwölferhorn are closed indefinitely, according to the municipality’s website.
Forest road threatened
“The mass moves about 20 meters in twelve hours. The forest road is threatened, trees fall over. That is why, in consultation with the authorities, we have decided to close off the entire valley inside,” said Mayor Otto Kloiber (ÖVP) on ORF Radio Salzburg.
Every 50 to 60 years the slope starts to slide, this time it was “a very big event”, the mayor continued.
