The Israeli Air Force has attacked targets in Syria in response to shelling in the annexed Golan Heights. The Israeli army announced on Sunday that military facilities had been hit. Syrian state media reported explosions near Damascus. According to Israeli information, six rockets had previously been fired from Syrian soil towards the occupied Golan Heights on the border between the two countries.
The Israeli army then fired on the rocket launchers, Syrian army sites, military radar systems and artillery posts. The Syrian Defense Ministry said its air defense intercepted some Israeli missiles. There was only material damage.
Israel sees Syria as responsible
The Israeli army said it holds the Syrian state responsible for what happened and will not allow Israel’s sovereignty to be violated. Of the six rockets fired, only three entered Israeli-controlled territory; of these, two fell on open ground, the third was intercepted by the air defense system.
The Lebanese TV channel al-Mayadeen reported that al-Quds forces claimed responsibility for the rocket attack on the Golan Heights. The brigades are the Iranian-backed armed branch of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
Concerned about Iranian influence
The Israeli Air Force regularly bombs targets in neighboring civil war-torn Syria. Israel wants to prevent its archenemy Iran and its militias, such as Hezbollah, from expanding their military influence in Syria. Besides Russia, Iran is Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s main ally in the civil war.
A hail of rockets towards Israel
Heavy rocket fire from Lebanon hit Israel on Thursday. Israel blamed the Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas for the attacks and subsequently launched airstrikes against militant Palestinian bases in the neighboring country to the north and in the Gaza Strip. Numerous rockets were also fired at Israel from the Palestinian area on the Mediterranean Sea.
Lebanese acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati said an army investigation found “non-Lebanese elements” fired the rockets at Israel. However, Israeli experts assume that the Hezbollah militia controls all processes in the south of the country.
