Late in the night from Sunday to Monday, the rescue service was called to the apartment of an elderly man in Villach – he had fallen out of his nursing bed and got trapped in his arm.
When he fell out of bed, the man fell so badly that his arm got caught in the edge of his wheelchair, which was standing next to the bed. Unfortunately, the paramedics could not free the man from his plight themselves and therefore called the fire brigade.
Freed with bolt cutters
“When we arrived on the scene with our technical platoon and arrived in the apartment with numerous technical devices, the fastest way was to free them with bolt cutters,” said Oberbrandmeister Scharf Alexander, platoon commander of the main fire station in Villach.
The fire brigade then trapped two spokes of the wheelchair and was able to free the man’s arm quickly. This was then taken to the LKH Villach by the ambulance personnel for further clarification. The main fire station in Villach deployed three vehicles and 12 men for this rescue operation, which lasted more than half an hour.
