Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the construction of his own space station as a necessary step for the planned implementation of the national lunar program. The cost of its construction is estimated in Moscow at 600 billion rubles (currently about 6.7 billion euros).
“As far as I understand, one of the functions of the Russian space station is to prepare for the realization of our plans on the moon,” Putin said Wednesday during a meeting with the head of the space agency Roscosmos. Yuri Borisov.
ISS is scheduled to remain operational until 2028
Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine more than a year ago. As a result of the huge increase in tensions with the West that followed, Moscow threatened to withdraw from the International Space Station (pictured below). According to a decision by Roskosmos in February this year, the Russian module of the ISS should continue to operate until 2028.
The station would circle at an altitude of 300 to 350 kilometers
The design for the Russian space station should be ready this summer. It is scheduled to enter service after 2024 – and according to preliminary plans, it will circle the Earth in an orbit of 300 to 350 kilometers. The ISS currently flies at an altitude of more than 400 kilometers above the Earth.
Putin now estimates the financing of the Russian space program this year at 2.8 billion euros. The reason for his meeting with the head of the Russian space program is the day of space travel in Russia: on April 12, 1961, the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space.
