The death of innkeepers has accelerated enormously, chairman of the gastro division of the Chamber of Commerce Mario Pulker explains in the krone.tv lecture. “The 2023 balance sheets show that there has never been such a poor operating result as last year.”
Energy costs, huge increases in interest rates, higher rental and leasing rates and high costs of goods all have a negative impact on businesses. “The death of hosts has been going on for decades, now a turbo has been put in place again,” says Pulker. Moreover, many companies will be transferred in the coming years. “You notice that young people are not prepared to take over companies.”
“Getting people back to work”
The personnel situation is also precarious, because we increasingly see that people do not want to take a job because of the high social benefits. “It’s about getting people back to work. It cannot be the case that social benefits are so high that you cannot take a job. That is something that does not work in business.”
Smoking ban outdoors would be a “catastrophe”.
Pulker calls a possible outdoor smoking ban for restaurants a catastrophe. “When people start smoking in urban areas, we have the problem that residents feel harassed.” This could lead to the curfew being brought forward, which in turn will impact sales. “In the worst case scenario, it will have to be closed.”
The smoking ban in 2019 already meant the end for many companies, Pulker explains. “Now that we have created the outdoor dining areas, it has all cost a lot of money and now people in the EU are coming up with the idea of introducing stricter measures here. For us this is a total no-go. Yes, the European Commission directive is voluntary, it will still be a difficult issue.”
