Special forces on site? – Leaks point to elite NATO troops in Ukraine

Date:

Leaked US intelligence documents show Western military special forces have been deployed to Ukraine. For example, Britain is putting about 50 members of its elite unit known as “Special Forces” at war in the country, British media report unanimously, citing one of the documents.

According to reports from the Guardian and the BBC, other NATO countries are said to be on the scene with similar units – France and the US with around 15 troops each, Latvia reportedly deploying 17 and the Netherlands one. The document does not reveal exactly where the special forces are and what they are doing on the ground.

The presence of elite troops in Ukraine is likely to be exploited by the Russian government, which has long claimed that not only Ukraine, but also NATO is the enemy.

“Don’t just take claims”
In principle, the British Ministry of Defense does not provide any information about such special forces missions and does not want to respond to the reports. However, the ministry issued a blanket response to the leaks on Twitter, saying the contents of the documents contained a “serious degree of inaccuracy”. One should not take the claims therein “at face value”, as there is a risk of misinformation spreading.

Secret documents from US agencies about the Russian offensive war against Ukraine have been circulating on the Internet for weeks. American media have been reporting sensitive material about both warring parties for days without publishing the documents themselves. It is unclear who published the documents that were circulated on pro-Russian channels weeks ago.

Looking for leakage
The US authorities are currently verifying the authenticity of the documents and the origin of the leaks. According to a New York Times report, a number of genuine documents were initially published online in their original form. Manipulated versions are said to have appeared later on.
