In the Republic of Moldova, pro-Russian oligarch Ilan Shor was finally sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Chisinau Court of Appeal on Thursday evening in the so-called “bank robbery of the century” case. Shor was not present at the sentencing hearing. The appellate body also ordered the confiscation of assets totaling 15 billion Moldovan lei.
In the first instance, Shor had already been convicted in 2017 for the cause of the largest corruption scandal in Moldova’s history – at the time the court considered it proven that the businessman and former local politician was one of the key players in the “billion dollar bank robbery” in which in 2014 more than about a billion dollars (915.58 million euros) disappeared overnight from three leading Moldovan financial institutions.
Advertised for international manhunt since 2019
In 2019, things got too hot for the now 36-year-old in his own homeland after the government of the highly corrupt Democrats (PDM) resigned – Shor, like many other Moldavian oligarchs, immediately fled abroad. According to media reports, he is currently in Israel, from where he is funding his pro-Russian Shor party’s protests against pro-European authorities in Chisinau. The oligarch has been on an international manhunt since 2019.
In the evening, Moldovan President Maia Sandu briefly commented on Facebook on the verdict of the Chisinau Appellate Body: the judiciary had prevailed and justice, especially towards the people, had won – the “thief” had to spend 15 years behind bars while his illegally obtained assets were confiscated, Sandu wrote.
