After Eva Kaili, former MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri has now also been able to leave prison. The politician has been placed under house arrest in Brussels and his whereabouts will be checked with an ankle bracelet in the future.
His release was decided last week. Panzeri is considered one of the key figures in the corruption scandal. He had already been arrested in December in connection with alleged bribery attempts. The governments of the Gulf states of Qatar and Morocco have allegedly attempted to bribe representatives of the EU parliament in order to influence their policies. Both countries deny the allegations.
In total, the police seized about 1.5 million euros in cash. The suspects include MEP Marc Tarabella and deposed Vice President Eva Kaili, who was released on Wednesday. Tarabella was placed under house arrest on Tuesday. Kaili’s partner Francesco Giorgi has been under house arrest since the end of February and in Naples this measure also applies to MEP Andrea Cozzolino.
Pier Antoni Panzeri joined his colleagues on Thursday. He is under house arrest in Brussels. In January, the Italian reached an agreement with the Brussels prosecutor’s office that he would cooperate with them and testify about financial arrangements with third countries and those involved. In return, his sentence should be lighter.
