Winter is not giving up yet! The Italian depression called “Rudolf” will bring a lot of rain on Friday and the weekend, especially in the east of the country, and some regions will not be spared from fresh snow in the coming days. Snow in the west and south of Austria already caused winter conditions on the roads on Thursday.
March in eastern Austria was much too dry. However, that should change in April. On Thursday, a cold front reached the Alps and a low-pressure area formed over the Gulf of Genoa. According to experts from Austria’s Severe Weather Center (UWZ), this low named “Rudolf” will travel through Hungary to Poland on a so-called five-b train on Friday.
More rain than usual in April
“This weather situation is expected to bring rain for the eastern half of the country and in fact there are signs of more rain in many places towards the weekend, which would otherwise be normal for all of April,” said Manfred Spatzierer, chief meteorologist at UWZ.
But “Rudolf” not only brings rain showers, mother Holle also reports back to the country with snow. Sometimes the snow line drops to about 700 meters or even to 400 meters on Friday night in the eastern mountains and hills. In the high parts of the Hohe Tauern there should be up to a meter of fresh snow. The higher pass roads such as the Brenner Pass and the Tauernautobahn also turn white here and there. Some fresh snow is also expected in many valleys in the northern Alps on Friday.
Snowfall on Thursday also in Klagenfurt
Snowflakes fell again on Thursday in the capital of the state of Carinthia and on the local mountain Schöckl in Graz. In Styria there was already a car accident on the Schanzsattel on Thursday. Vorarlberg was also not spared from the snow: there was fresh snow at an altitude of 680 meters in Tschagguns in the Montafon.
Despite the many rain showers expected in April, the risk of flooding remains low due to the low snow line. A sharp rise in the water level is only to be expected in smaller rivers and streams. This event is very valuable for nature, but it is a drop in the ocean for the low groundwater levels in the east and for the lakes in Burgenland, according to the experts at UWZ.
The start of the week is still erratic
The weather will also remain changeable at the beginning of next week, the low pressure will only decrease hesitantly. However, temperatures will slowly rise slightly next week and come close to the seasonal average – the transitional jacket can finally be unpacked.
