Police in Kenya have saved 11 members of a Christian sect from deliberate starvation in a remote forest village. Four people were killed in the evacuation, police said in the tourist-popular coastal town of Malindi.
There may be more deaths, police said. On Friday, officers searched the vast forest for evidence of a possible mass grave containing up to 31 bodies. Authorities in Malindi received a tip on Thursday that followers of a local pastor were dying of starvation in a wooded area hoping to “meet Jesus.”
Four people died during the operation
“The team managed to reach some households and rescue 15 people, six of whom are emaciated and in critical condition,” police said. Four of them died during the rescue operation. The remaining eleven have been taken to a hospital.
Pastor had attracted attention with radical views
The police suspected a free church pastor from Malindi as the leader of the sect, who allegedly owned the forest. According to Kenyan media reports, his radical views have attracted attention in the past and he has been tried several times.
