700 exhibits to choose from – worth 135 million euros: treasure jewels are available

Date:

Very special jewelry can be snatched in May and November – the auction of the jewelry collection of the late billionaire heiress Heidi Hortens takes place in Geneva at auction house Christie’s. From Saturday, 40 pieces can be admired in the Horten Collection in Vienna.

“It is the largest private collection of jewelery in the world ever to be auctioned,” said Angela Baillou, CEO of Christie’s Austria. The estimated value is 135.7 million euros.

Excellent quality
The exhibits include a 400 gram emerald necklace with a lower estimate of 305,000 euros and a diamond ring worth 1.6 million. “The collection is very special because the pieces are of a very high quality,” says Baillou. The jewels in Horten’s private museum in central Vienna opposite the Albertina will not be on display until Sunday.

“We’ve never had such a large amount of jewelry”
You can also marvel at six unique pieces from the traditional Viennese jeweler Köchert. Historically particularly valuable pieces from the Horten collection, such as a Marie Antoinette pearl worth 35 million Swiss francs, remained in the museum, Christie’s said. According to Christie’s, a total of 700 pieces will go under the hammer at upcoming auctions in May and fall.

“We’ve never had such a large amount of jewelry,” says Baillou. “To date, there have been three jewelry auctions worldwide that have raised more than $100 million. In this case, we even expect 150 million (135.7 million euros).” The most expensive piece in the auction is a ruby worth $18 million. “The cheapest pieces are available from 5,000 euros,” explains Christie’s expert Frederik Schwarz.

The money will benefit the billionaire’s private foundation. This finances, among other things, the preservation of the museum, but also clinical research. Horten became a billionaire through the inheritance of her husband Helmut, who died in 1987. She founded the foundation in 2020. On June 12, 2022, she passed away at the age of 81. Horten was considered one of the wealthiest Austrians during her lifetime.
