Fought against waves – two-meter shark landed on Majorca beach

Date:

A blue shark got lost on a beach on the Balearic island of Mallorca on Sunday: the two-meter-long animal was discovered in the evening in Cala Llombards near Santanyí and filmed by local residents. The clip shows the animal struggling in the shallows as the waves wash it ashore.

The hikers who noticed the incident discussed whether they could and should help the shark. According to the witnesses, the animal looked healthy, the “Mallorca Zeitung” reported. In the end, the blue shark managed to get back into the deeper water on its own and saved itself.

Blue sharks are usually not around the coast, but far out to sea. However, swimmers need not worry, as the local newspaper writes: attacks are not to be feared on the island’s beaches. Blue sharks are among the most common shark species in the world, but they have now become rare for the Balearic Islands.

Expert advises: “Don’t touch!”
If you see a similar incident, you must act immediately: “Anyone who sees something like this should call 112 immediately, and the rescuers will then forward the call to specialists,” says Xisca Pujol of the animal rescue service of Palma Aquarium. The expert warns that it is dangerous to get too close to a wild animal. In addition, animals can transmit diseases or people can transmit dangerous pathogens. “The general rule in such situations is: don’t touch unless a specialist advises otherwise,” says Pujol.

The animal rescuer has a hunch as to why the shark may have ended up in this situation: “It was probably chasing an animal and ended up in shallow water.” A resident of Cala Llombards also reported to the “Mallorca Zeitung” sharks “Sharks keep coming into our bay because squid swim here.” However, she hasn’t seen one up close, so the video “would have made the rounds around town in no time,” she explained.
