Baby Josef was in a hurry: the Straßwalchen ambulance crew in Salzburg had a lot to do on the night of April 2. Unexpectedly, Mama Raphaela from Schleedorf went into labor. With the help of the paramedics, she gave birth to her son before they even got to the hospital.
“It all happened so fast,” says Mama Raphaela Langwieder. The woman from Schleedorf was pregnant with her third child and contractions suddenly started shortly after 2 am. Although the Red Cross team from the Strasswalchen office arrived a little later and immediately took the expectant mother to the state hospital, she gave birth to her son while driving.
“The most important thing for us was to stay calm”
So the paramedics helped give birth to the car. “The most important thing for us was to stay calm,” said paramedic Maximilian Gerbl, who had previously helped with deliveries. So did his colleague Hermann Hupf.
For transport leader Michael Furch, it was the first birth. “In a childbirth course we learn the most important measurements and hand movements,” he explains, “but in practice that is something else. I am all the more happy that everything went well and that the baby was born healthy.”
Dad got to the hospital faster
The child’s father then greeted his son when the ambulance arrived at the hospital. He had taken a different route from the rescue team.
Meanwhile, the two daughters were also able to welcome their brother Josef. She and their parents are very happy with the addition to the family. Not only for the Langwieder family, but also for the rescue team, this birth will always be remembered
