Barrier-free? – Official channels presented many obstacles for the elderly pensioner

Date:

The passport application of a disabled woman from Pielachtal in Lower Austria threatened to fail because the finger scan line was too short. District Captain Josef Kronister quickly found a solution!

Pensioner Renate B. has been dependent on a wheelchair for almost 20 years. She didn’t want to let her desire to travel spoil her, even now that she was somewhat advanced in age. However, as is known, this is not possible without a valid passport.

No elevator and a cable that is too short
The first, nearest destination on the way to distant lands: the office of the district administration in the town hall of the neighboring town of Kirchberg. But there was also a seemingly insurmountable obstacle when registering for an appointment. Because unfortunately the officer reported on the phone that the consultation hour had to be held on the first floor. Because there is no elevator there, the only option is the stairwell with many stairs. Transfer to the wheelchair accessible ground floor? Impossible, since the cable for the finger scan was too short and could not be extended, Renate B. was initially refused.

Quick solution
Both District Governor Josef Kronister and Mayor Franz Singer responded quickly and humanely to the request for help from the “Krone”. A technical – namely digital – solution is made possible. The applicant will be received with all the bureaucratic honors next week. The new travel document is safe for her. “I am very happy and grateful that the authorities have now found a solution. I am already looking forward to my new passport,” said the person concerned.
