What were the most important topics in the past year from a press photographer’s point of view? Of course the war in Ukraine, but also Afghanistan and climate change. The photo of an injured, heavily pregnant woman on a stretcher, which achieved international fame, was chosen as the winning snapshot at the renowned international photo competition “World Press Photo” (see photo above).
The Ukrainian Evgeniy Maloletka was awarded first prize for this, the jury announced in Amsterdam on Thursday. The photo from March 9, 2022 for the AP news agency shocked people around the world. It shows an injured heavily pregnant woman being carried on a stretcher from a bombed-out maternity hospital. The woman and her child died shortly afterwards.
“As if they were trying to kill Ukraine’s future”
This recording captures the human suffering caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, said jury chairman Brent Lewis. “The deaths of both the pregnant woman and the child sum up much of this war, as well as Russia’s possible intent. As one juror said, it’s like they’re trying to kill the future of Ukraine.”
The winners in various categories were chosen from around 60,000 photos. Mads Nissen from Denmark received the award for the best photo story of the year for a series about the difficult living conditions of many Afghans under the Taliban. The Armenian Anush Babajanyan received the prize for a series about the water crisis in Central Asia, exacerbated by climate change. The Egyptian Mohamed Mahdy won a prize for a documentary project about a fishing village in Alexandria.
Exhibition in Vienna’s WestLicht in autumn
More than 3,700 photographers from 127 countries took part in the competition. First, regional juries selected winning photos for their respective region in different categories. All prize-winning photos can be seen from 15 September in WestLicht in Vienna.
