At least 60 people have been killed in an attack on a village in the West African country of Burkina Faso. The perpetrators are said to have worn the military uniform of the National Armed Forces.
The massacre had already taken place on Thursday in the Yatenga province in the north of the country, the Ouahigouya prosecutor announced on Sunday. An investigation was launched.
In a statement, the prosecutor said he was informed of the attack in Karma village by the local police. The injured have been brought to safety and are being treated in hospitals. The attackers had “captured various goods”.
Men and youth simply “executed”
Local residents reported a robbery by “more than a hundred people on motorcycles and pick-ups” last Thursday. Accordingly, men and youths were executed by “men in military uniforms”. Survivors reported “almost 80 dead”. About a week ago, at least 40 members of the army were killed in an attack by suspected jihadists on a village 15 kilometers from Ouahigouya.
The landlocked country of Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world. Since 2015, there have been regular armed attacks by jihadist groups, especially in the north of the country, some of which collaborate with the terrorist network al-Qaeda and the jihadist militia Islamic State (IS). More than 10,000 people died in the fighting and two million people were forced to flee.
