Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has promised to continue to defend the disputed city of Bakhmut: “It is impossible for us to give up Bakhmut. That would widen the front and give the Russian forces and Wagner the opportunity to take more of our land.”
While Zelenskyy again showed combativeness in an interview with the news channel Al Arabiya on Sunday, the Russian units reported that they were making progress in their attempt to completely capture the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, according to the Defense Ministry in Moscow. So they took two more blocks to the west of the city, which had been fighting fiercely for months. Airborne units would also provide reinforcements in the north and south.
Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine is one of the current hot spots of the war. For months Russian units and mercenaries have been trying to gain the upper hand in what they call Artemovsk.
Repulsed drone attack
According to the governor, Russia’s Black Sea Fleet repelled a drone attack on the Crimean port of Sevastopol on Monday morning. “According to the latest information, one surface drone was destroyed… the second exploded by itself,” Moscow-installed governor Mikhail Razvozhayev wrote on his Telegram channel. “Now the city is quiet.” No damage has been reported, he adds.
