Syrians strongest group – Asylum: Slight decrease in applications in Austria

Date:

The number of asylum applications in Austria fell in the first quarter. According to current figures from the Ministry of the Interior, 10,167 applications have been submitted. In the same period last year, this was eleven percent more. About three quarters of the applicants were male. The strongest origin group were Syrians, followed by Moroccans and Afghans.

Although Moroccans came to Austria unusually often this year, they have almost no chance of asylum. In the first three months, 0.1 percent of Moroccan cases were positively decided. Only one Indian was granted asylum.

End of visa freedom in Serbia
Despite the end of visa freedom in Serbia, citizens of this country still rank fifth in the application statistics, but the trend is clearly declining. In comparison, 62 percent of Syrian applications are approved. A total of 3,644 people were granted asylum in the first quarter. In addition, 1,797 refugees received subsidiary protection. 451 people received a humanitarian residence permit.

13,000 refugees left Austria independently
2669 negative decisions were made in the fast and accelerated procedures. In addition, by the end of March, about 13,000 people had bypassed the procedure and left Austria alone again. The numbers in basic care are still high, with more than 87,000 places occupied at the beginning of April. Of course, the numbers were even higher in the previous year, reaching 93,000. 60 percent of those in primary care are Ukrainian citizens displaced by Russian aggression.

FPÖ criticizes asylum statistics
Criticism of the presented asylum numbers for the first quarter came from the FPÖ. “The current number of applications is still 40 percent above the long-term average and is therefore at an unreasonably high level,” analyzed FPÖ security spokesman Hannes Amesbauer.

And added: “On the one hand, this is not only comparable to the 11,426 applications in the same period of the previous disaster year, in which the bottom line was more than 110,000 illegal immigrants to Austria, but it is also well above the ten-year average of 7277 asylum applications in the same And this calculated average is already exorbitantly high due to the asylum crisis of 2015/2016 and the current new mass migration!”
