Anger in Haiti – Gang members lynched in front of the police

Date:

Harrowing scenes took place on Monday in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. The situation escalated after police officers arrested several suspected gang members. Angry residents grabbed the suspects from a minibus and killed them. The bodies were then burned in the street.

Police have not provided information on how the men could have been abducted from their care. It simply read: “Unfortunately, the alleged gang members have been lynched by members of the public.” Haitian media reported that the bodies of about 14 people killed had been burned. The residents were therefore under great tension because of the gang violence in the city.

The Caribbean country lhas been under the violence of gangs for years, which are sometimes close to political actors and, according to the UN, control much of the capital. The caretaker government, in power since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021, asked for help from an armed international force about six months ago – it has not yet come to that.

Gang war, cholera and famine
Nearly 70 people were killed in gang clashes in the Cité Soleil neighborhood between April 14 and April 19 alone, according to a UN report on Sunday. The violence also restricts the movement of people and the movement of goods. Many schools and health facilities are closed.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Americas. The country is gripped by a hunger crisis that reached a critical point in March, according to the UN’s World Food Programme. There is also a cholera outbreak that has killed at least 670 people since October, according to the latest figures from the Haitian health ministry.
