The probably shortest limit of 100 km/h in Austria on the A2 in Carinthia has been arousing great surprise among motorists for weeks.
Certainly many commuters have not yet noticed the new “100” on the southern autobahn at the Warmbad exit, because this speed limit has long since been lifted after ten seconds of driving. The new speed limit is no less than 350 meters long and only applies in the direction of Italy.
For security reasons
The traffic authorities, who are responsible for such restrictions, want nothing to do with Austria’s shortest motorway. So why is this necessary? Research by “Krone” shows that this limit was imposed by the motorway manager ASFINAG itself for safety reasons.
The shock absorber at the Villach-Warmbad exit is defective. Legally, ASFINAG is also allowed to set such limits in the interest of safety. “Traffic restrictions that cannot be postponed” is what it is called in official German.
Only temporary
There are another hundred in the direction of Villach near Arnoldstein. A shock absorber is also defective there. “The repair or replacement of these dampers has been tendered and the order has already been placed,” reports ASFINAG. When the work is done, the mini-hundreds come away again.
