The act shocked many across the country. Three men are said to have shot an owl family in Upper Austria. However, the suspects in Pram now claim to have shot at crows.
Three men had surrounded a pear tree in a meadow in Pram on Sunday evening and fired shotguns (including a semi-automatic rifle) into the treetop. As reported, a witness photographed the goings-on. However, the trio noticed the man and then fled.
Witness then discovered the body
When the 36-year-old looked at the tree, he found a shot bird’s nest and the carcasses of an adult long-eared owl and its four chicks. The witness, who is a hunter himself, alerted the police.
He reported that a local man (67) and his sons (36 and 31) killed the raptor family. What’s especially racy about it: one of the sons would even be a sworn game warden whose job would be to monitor compliance with hunting regulations and report violations.
The suspects deny the crime
On Tuesday, the suspects – all three hunters – were questioned by the police. While they admitted that the shell casings they seized came from them, they denied firing at the owl’s nest.
Their justification: during hunting training with the dog, they had seen crows near a farm. There would have been problems with these birds in the past. They want to have a killed crow deposited in the collection container of the animal carcass disposal.
However, crows are currently also protected. A provisional ban on weapons was imposed on the suspects and their shotguns were also seized.
